Nigeria is a country that has three tiers of government namely: the Federal Government, State Government and Local Government. For the purpose of this article, we are going to list the richest local government areas in Nigeria in terms of natural resources. Before we dive into the list, lets answer few questions for clarification.
What is a Local Government ? A local government is a form of public administration which in a majority of contexts, exists as the lowest tier of administration within a given state. While a local government area is an administrative division of a country that a local government is responsible for and is administered by a Local Government Council consisting of a chairman who is the Chief Executive of the LGA, and other elected members who are referred to as Councillors.

What are the functions of local government in Nigeria ? Although, the list of the functions of the local government areas are enshrined in the 1999 constitution, it is not restricted to the following:
collection of taxes/fees,
provision of transportation,
establishment and regulation of parks, markets, and all the public conveniences,
birth, marriage, deaths official registration,
recommendations for State economy,
control of advertising,
licensing of various vehicles,
construction of roads and other facilities,
assessment of private houses, etc.
5 Richest Local Government Areas (LGA) list in Nigeria
1. Obio Akpor LGA
Obio Akpor is the most wealthiest Local Government Area in terms of natural resources. Located in River State which is also one of the richest states in Nigeria. Obio Akpor is one of the major cities of the Niger Delta region and the leading economic centers of the whole country, with mineral resources such as oil and gas located in the area. The local government is also divided into 7 different wards. Apart from the oil found in Obio Akpor, the residents are also involved in agriculture.
2. Ikeja LGA
It is the located in Lagos and is also Lagos state capital. In this list, Ikeja is the second richest local Government Area in Nigeria. It has one of Nigeria’s international airport, with resources such as wood, water, coal, natural gas are found in the state. The largest mall in Lagos state is located at Ikeja.
3. Kurmi LGA
It is located in Taraba state. Kurmi is the third richest local government in Nigeria among the top 10. One thing about this local government is that it is known for its fertile land which allows agricultural practice thrive in the state. Kurmi local government area is the main agricultural base of the country as they produce majority of food for consumption in the whole country and for themselves.
4. Esan Central LGA
It is situated in Edo state with many towns and cities. Esan Central LGA is the fourth richest local government areas in Nigeria todayJust like Kurmi LGA, its major sector is agriculture. There are also hospitals, factories, hotels e.t.c in the area.
5. Etinan LGA
Etnan local government area is located in Akwa Ibom State, and are the 5th richest local government area in Nigeria. One of the most beautiful cities in Nigeria. Research suggests that it is the richest in oil production in Nigeria and also the most peaceful area in Nigeria.
Although these local government are seen the richest in Nigeria when it comes to natural resources, they have been affected in one way or the other due to the current downturn rocking Nigeria.
The largest local government in Nigeria in terms of population is Alimosho Local Government Area in Lagos State, Nigeria with 1,288,714 inhabitants according to official census carried out in 2006 while the largest state in Nigeria in terms of land mass is Niger state.
